Summer Fun in Goleta

Celebrate America’s birthday with these annual 4th of July festivals:

  • Old Fashioned 4th of July (304 N. Los Carneros Road) – Celebrate a hometown Independence Day at Rancho La Patera & Stow House from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The festival features live music and entertainment, hayrides, delicious BBQ, games, local artists, classic cars, old engine show and plenty of family-friendly fun.
  • 4th of July Family Fun Fair (150 N. Kellogg Avenue) – Join the Elks Lodge from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. for a day of family fun with food and activities for everyone. There will be plenty of activities to keep the entire family entertained all day, from face painting and jumpers for the kids to bingo and pull-tabs for the grown-ups. Afterwards, everyone can gather back together and enjoy a nice, cold root beer float.
  • Goleta Fireworks Festival (7050 Phelps Road) – Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Goleta Noontime and The Rotary Club of Goleta, the annual fireworks festival at Girsh Park is an anticipated event all year long. Celebrating its 20th year, activities include bounce houses, a rock climbing wall, corn hole, watermelon and pie eating contests, face painting, carnival games and more. There will be live music by DJ Qu1z0 and local favorite, Area 51. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. and the spectacular fireworks show begins at 9:00 p.m.

  • Music at the Ranch (304 N. Los Carneros Road) – Grab your picnic blanket and dancing shoes for everyone’s favorite outdoor summer concert series: Music at the Ranch! Relax with family and friends while enjoying music from the area’s favorite bands, Tuesdays July 11 – August 15 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Stow House.
  • Goleta’s Dam Dinner: Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 19 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. for the Fifth Annual Dam Dinner at the Lake Los Carneros Dam! Last year’s event was the best yet with more than 300 people coming out to enjoy the good weather, rockin’ music and to spend time with family, friends and neighbors. Stay tuned for more information. Let the Sun Save You Money

The Community Environmental Council (CEC) has launched Solarize Santa Barbara to help make going solar simpler and more affordable for homeowners. Solarize Santa Barbara is a community-led group-purchasing program for residential solar electric systems available throughout Santa Barbara County through July 30, 2017. Two installers (Brighten Solar and Planet Solar) have been selected by a committee of local experts and are offering sizeable discounts on installs within the County. Previous CEC Solarize programs on the Central Coast have helped 524 homeowners go solar. To help homeowners better understand the process and benefit of going solar, as well as financing options, CEC is hosting free, educational workshops throughout Santa Barbara County. Do You Know What To Do in an Emergency?

Did you feel the earthquakes that struck eight miles west of Isla Vista the evening of May 16? Every time there is the possibility of a disaster, you probably remind yourself that you need to be better prepared. This summer the City of Goleta is providing you the opportunity to do so. Join us for our free eight week Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Training June 21 – August 9 (Spanish) or June 22 – August 10 (English) from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Goleta City Hall Council Chambers (130 Cremona Drive, Suite B). Participants must attend all classes. The CERT program is designed to help communities prepare for effective disaster response through training and planning. With training and information, individual and community groups can be prepared to serve as a crucial resource capable of performing many of the emergency functions needed in the immediate post-disaster period. Build a Better World this Summer at Goleta Public Library

Readers of all ages are invited to explore what it means to “Build a Better World” this summer. Starting on Tuesday, June 13, children can sign up for Santa Barbara Public Library System’s 2017 Summer Reading Program. Throughout the summer kids and teens will be encouraged to read, visit the public library, and earn rewards when they talk about their favorite stories or things they have learned.

The program runs through July 31, and is filled with weekly family events and more. Storytimes and activities will highlight construction (from tree-houses to skyscrapers), creativity, teamwork and lifelong learning. Goleta Library will also be celebrating 20 years of Harry Potter with a trivia challenge and craft projects in June.

Get Your Play On this July with the City of Goleta!

The City of Goleta is celebrating Parks and Recreation Month this July with ideas for free or low cost activities to participate in each day of the month. Started in 1985, Parks and Recreation Month highlights the vital and powerful role that local parks and recreation play in conservation, health and wellness and social equity efforts in communities across the country. This year, residents are encouraged to discover the power of play at local parks and recreation facilities by joining friends on the playground or learning a new sport like pickleball, now available at the Evergreen tennis courts. The City of Goleta, along with the National Parks and Recreation Association, encourages everyone to get out there to experience the power of play, no matter your age or ability.

New Lifesaving Trauma Kits for City of Goleta First Responders

In an effort to ensure medical aid is provided to the injured in a timely and efficient manner, the City of Goleta will be providing each of the 50 first responders assigned to the Sheriff’s Goleta Valley Patrol Bureau (which includes Isla Vista, Unincorporated Goleta Valley and the City of Goleta) with a Crisis Response Medical Trauma kit. These trauma kits provide essential life-saving equipment to begin treating injured victims until more advanced medical personnel and equipment arrive. In many of today’s large scale critical incidents, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel are delayed in responding into a “hot zone” until their safety can be assured. So for large scale incidents like school or work place mass shootings, the first responders need to provide medical care until the scene is rendered safe and then medical personnel can enter the scene and safely tend to the wounded. Providing the Crisis Response Medical Trauma Kit to each of the first responders will ensure that they can provide medical aid to the injured in a timely and efficient manner. An additional benefit to these kits is that they contain essential medical items to allow deputies to administer self-aid in the event that they are injured in the field.

The kits are funded by the City of Goleta’s Public Safety Fund, which is funded entirely by Camino Real LLC (owner of Camino Real Marketplace). Camino Real LLC has contributed over $1,050,000 for Goleta public safety efforts since 2008. Contributions are used for funding public safety needs: operations and equipment purchases, public education and emergency preparedness effort, community emergency response training and certification, public outreach and communication – emergency notifications systems and/or other community projects mutually desired and agreed upon by Camino Real LLC and the City.

You’re Invited to our Upcoming Workshop

The Bicycle Pedestrian Master Plan is in full swing. Feedback that has been collected through the survey, workshops and consultant research is currently being analyzed.  A workshop will be held June 21 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. at the Goleta Valley Community Center (5679 Hollister Avenue) to present the results. It is also an opportunity for the City to get feedback on design alternatives and treatments. Attendees will also learn about the upcoming Old Town Sidewalk Infill Project. Goleta Named one of the Safest Cities in California

Goleta once again garners national attention for its safety, and is the only city in Santa Barbara County to make the top 100 safest cities list in California by LendEDU. LendEDU, a financial products company specializing in student loans, knows that the safety of a city is a determining factor of where to live. The top 100 safest cities in each state were ranked based on their total crime risk score and on the difference between their score and the national average total crime risk score of 100. This is Goleta’s sixth award for being a safe city in five years.

Street Paving Coming Soon!

The City of Goleta is aware of the deteriorating condition of the roads and understands that those who use these roads are frustrated. There are over 80 miles of roads in the City of Goleta and City Council has approved $18.3 million to help repair these roads over the next five years. The first part of the project begins this month and includes:

Construction is Under Way on the Hollister Class I Bike Path

You may have noticed the work being done on Hollister Avenue between Pacific Oaks Road and Ellwood Elementary School. Construction is in full swing on the new Hollister Class I Bike Path, which will provide a safe way for local students to get to school. During most of the six month construction period, Hollister Avenue in that area will be reduced to two lanes with left turn lanes remaining.
