New Mural in Old Town

Foundation Press and Carpeteria Partner on Large-Scale Community Mural

A new mural is taking shape in Old Town Goleta, bringing local art, creativity, and community pride to a familiar stretch of Hollister Avenue. Envisioned as a new “Welcome Way to Old Town Goleta,” the large-scale mural will celebrate the history, character, and community that make Goleta unique while creating a welcoming visual landmark for residents and visitors.

The project brings together Foundation Press, a locally owned screen printing and design studio based in Goleta, and Carpeteria Carpet One Floor & Home to transform the business’s exterior into a space for public art and community expression. Lead artist Curtis Crawshaw, founder of Foundation Press, has begun painting the mural and leading the installation.

The project began when Carpeteria applied for and received funding from the City of Goleta’s Old Town Pride of Place Grant Program to bring this vision of a mural to life. Carpeteria partnered with local artist Jessica Altstatt to develop the original concept, featuring Goleta-inspired imagery such as monarch butterflies, ocean wildlife, lemons, avocados, and the Santa Ynez Mountains. The design celebrates the area’s natural beauty and agricultural heritage while creating a welcoming entry point to Old Town Goleta.

Approved by the City Council in May 2025, the City’s $120,000 Old Town Pride of Place Grant Program helped local businesses make improvements that enhance the appearance, character, and vitality of Old Town. Grants support projects such as business signage, storefront improvements, murals, and marketing and events. The Carpeteria mural demonstrates how the program can help bring art into public spaces, celebrate local identity, and create new opportunities for people to connect with their community.

Beyond its visual impact, the mural reflects the value of local partnerships in shaping the places people live, work, and gather. By bringing together a local business, artists, and community members, the project will contribute to the continued revitalization of Old Town and create something lasting for Goleta.

Community members interested in getting involved, whether by helping paint the mural or contributing materials and other resources, are encouraged to contact Project Manager Alex Ramirez at info@fpressstudio.com.

While there is no scheduled completion date for the mural, you can see steady progress happening as you drive by. We look forward to seeing the completed mural with the community. Stay tuned for an update.
